reclaimed wood from Old Working Narrow boats
As we pass the middle of 2017, I am pleased to say that we have now collected more Elm recovered from the floors of Old Working Boats. We have therefore been able to extend our range of products featuring this and also Oak from similar sources.
Many thanks to Brinklow Boats and especially Rex who have made it possible for us to produce a range of stick handles using Elm. This is not just any Elm, this has spent the last 24 years on our canals as one section in the floor of the GUCC Narrowboat Denobla .
Denobla was built by Harland and Wolfe in 1935 for the GUCC and was part of a class of boats known as "Star Class". It is also what is known as "composite construction" that is it is of steel construction but has a wooden floor.

A start has been made on preparing and using this elm. The markings in the wood are excellent and it polishes up well. It was a bonus to find a use for the plank ends - these probably get cut off and burnt by those reclaiming these boards. At the moment we are concentrating on the walking sticks but other items are to follow. I am also looking to source a couple of other boards preferably with their history. Update Aug 2016 Most of our stick styles are now available made using the timber recovered from old working boats. We have a section of Oak keelson from an old wooden narrowboat. Unfortunately it is not possible to identify which boat this was. |

Foscote Crafts – More crafts from Historic Timber
Ex F.M.C, working narrowboat NB Clent. Built in 1947 at the FMC Uxbridge yard. This was the last wooden narrow boat to be built at Uxbridge. This boat is at present on the hard standing at Jessie Wharf in Braunston undergoing a major rebuild. Pete Boyce who is undertaking this work has been kind enough to let me sort through the displaced wood to source bits I might be able to reuse for my growing range of items crafted from timber with a history.
These clocks are the first major items to be made from a section of the old elm floor removed from Clent. The wear you see is where the wood has been rubbing against the bottom of the canal. The colouring of the elm has been affected by the steel bolts etc used in the floor, the time immersed in the canal will also have had an effect
